Marriage

Marriage is more than just good times and happiness together. Sometimes there’s pain and tears. Fresh wounds and old scars from the past that gets molded into the mix.

I remember the giddiness of being newlyweds and the playfulness about our days. Like the water hose fight right after we were married. In the rush of the blinding water we forgot about that rusty roll of hog wire…..I still have the scar.

There was that four wheeler ride after dark that was so romantic until we missed the turn in the dark and hit the ditch. I was still pulling briars out days after.

Marriage was painful those days.

Later there was the exploding ditch that knocked me down up on top of the hill and left him with a hairless face and singed smelling. I was pregnant with our son at that time. Marriage was scary that day.

There were the knight in shining armor days when decked out in Redwing boots and demin shorts, handgun at the ready, he kept watch on the trespasser next door. A drizzle was falling and my heart in my chest I waiting and watched and prayed. Once all was clear I could see him trekking back up our hill, my hero heading home back to my arms, when the slick bottom boots on the wet grass tried to yank him back from our haven…..he instigated the most amazing, never again attempted, James Bond roll. Up he popped again, never once having dropped his gun. How we laughed that day.

Then there was the menacing skunk -the trash bag destroyer. Armed with a rifle my white knight set out on a mission that day. I’ll never forget him jumping up on the hood of that car when the skunk came out of the bag sooner than expected. I’ll also never forget standing ready at the washing machine armed with vinegar as he undressed outside the back door. Marriage stunk that day.

There were signs that these days were to be expected. I’d heard the tales of his dangerous past. Falling out of the apple tree, landing on the doghouse, and putting a nail through his tongue into the roof of his mouth.

Falling through floors, incidences with wenches outside of barn lofts all in the name of playing.

There were also the wheeled accidents  tricycles down sets of stairs, bicycles wrecks with handlebars to the throat, and a three wheeler wreck that started out as a “watch this “ and resulted in trying to eat up a gravel road entirely on his own. That didn’t deter him though, years later he upgraded to a motorbike and an asphalt road.

Some events were simply from rushing around. Such as with a certain light fixture, having changed the bulb, he replaced the globe and dropped back down to finish his project underneath. The fixture fell and broke apart across the back of his head. Had I blinked I’d have missed it.

The VCR repair, one last tweak after testing it resulted in an Aborigine dance across the kitchen floor. He forgot to unplug it. How I laughed that day.

A failure to listen to one another can be blamed for some accidents. Words like “shouldn’t the truck be on a level spot first?” , or, “let me help you” went unheeded and he flipped the dirt bike out the side of the truck. That event resulted in an evening spent in the emergency room and I was awarded the “Yes, I should have listened to you” line anytime I bring it up.   Ever.  Still.   Like, all the time.

Through it all we have looked back at the events over the course of our marriage and found laughter in each one. What was once scary or painful or stinky at the time became fun memories over the years.

We started out this journey with laughter and I hope that’s how we go out.

He always says,” you can’t be careful and have fun too.”

So I’ll simply say…. Have fun Charlie! I love you!

Happy Anniversary! (#16)

Kristi.

Just Cause

You often hear on the news about a person or group of people fighting for a Just Cause and I can understand that totally.

For example, if Zach comes in the kitchen and asks why I'm making a cake, I reply "just 'cause".

Or if I give someone a gift and it isn't their birthday, I did it just 'cause.

If our dog got his bedtime cookie too early, it becomes a just 'cause cookie and he gets a new one deemed bedtime snack.

All very good reasons for taking a stand in my book.

Just saying.....just 'cause this is my blog!  (smile)

Have a great day!

Picture Thought

Watching dirt being hauled wouldn't be near as exciting if it was done in a new dump truck.  There's just something about these old trucks.  Their simplicity and their surprising quietness.
Being around this old truck brings back memories of my childhood.  So much of my time as a child was around old grain trucks and old boom trucks that I can't help but be fond of this old dump truck.  If Heather hadn't already spoke for it......for a minute, just for a minute, I'd be tempted...........!
Until next time...........Have a great weekend!

Granny Squares Rag Rug

I set aside my oval rug to see what a granny square would look like in a rag rug.....
My sheet rag rug made out of granny squares.
Just three rounds in three different colors and single crocheted together.

It goes with my countertops nicely!
May add a few more blocks to make it bigger.  Not sure yet.

Within five minutes of being down, she decided it was "fit for a Queenie".

Till(er) We Meet Again

Back during the summer the kids did this to the yard....

Finally after much needed rain, the ground was right for tilling....

Ahh... much better!  Now I don't have to worry about running the lawnmower off in it or twisting my ankle in it walking to the shop after dark.  LOL!

Have a great day today!

Lock and Load

Here's what Zach was up to this weekend.
Dad taught him to reload.
He reloaded for his own gun; his .308 hunting rifle.
Getting everything ready.

Measuring the powder.

Using the trickler to fine tune powder.

Pouring powder in the case.

Aligning the bullet.

Checking again.

Seating bullet into case.

Final inspection.

Finished product!

He made several by himself.

Great job!

Webcams and Texts Don't Mix!

"A webcam plus a text does not an easy video make." - Confusedwomanous.

Did you catch yesterday's update video?  No?   I'll wait while you do.

Now you may ask yourself, "Just what does it take to make an update video?"

Apparently eight takes in this house. The first two takes went well but I wanted to fine tune it and not repeat myself so much. So after I felt I had it all down in my head the way I wanted it I tried for my third attempt. That’s when the phone starts going off. I close the message so it doesn’t go off again but now my train of thought has went out the window. The same window in which I wanted to hurl my phone before the day was through! Thus the fourth try was a fail. Now we come to the fifth and I’m ready but the phone goes off again in just about the same exact spot as it did in number three! Evidently they didn’t like being ignored! Imagine me having something other to do than text around here! The audacity! But that’s me for you; a real rebel! Finally after three more attempts I hit publish and didn’t look back.

Anyway said all that to introduce my blooper vid.

Hope you find it more amusing than I did.

New Digs

Yeah I know the new bed matches the living room but what's wrong with the couch?
It looks ok to me.

Wait a minute!  There's nothing wrong with the couch is there?!  You mean I'm suppose to sleep in this?

You're getting my best "Shame-on-You" look I have on file.

Well, it does feel pretty good.  I'm getting kind of sleepy.

Ahhh... this is the life!

Field Trip!!

We had an impromptu field trip this weekend.  I'm talking we planned this and prepared for this in about an hour.  With everything going on with my mother this past school year, we didn't take a field trip.  Better late than never, right?

We went bowling and putt putt golfing. I was too busy playing to take pics here.  My natural modesty keeps me from gloating on how well my bowling game was.  :)

 We had a picnic.
At Pinson Mounds.  An ancient Indian burial ground and archeology park.  I haven't been here since I was in elementary school.  My husband has lived here for thirty years and this was his first time.

Then we went into the museum. (Looks like Teletubbies should come out to play any minute.)
Then we hit the trails.  Up first is Saul's Mound.  This is huge!  The pics don't do it justice.
Just beyond this mound is a field with depressions in it.  The indians carried baskets of dirt from that field to build Saul's Mound.

On the backside of Saul's Mound are steps to the top.

View from the top.

The view was beautiful.  We counted six cell towers off in the distance in the first pic. The second pic is the backside of the museum.

We had it to ourselves so took our time taking pics.

There are mounds scattered everywhere here.  Our next stop on the trail was the boardwalk that ends at an overlook of the South Forked Deer River.

This tree caught our eye.  Again, the camera shrinks it to fit the frame.  Trust me this tree was massive.

I had Charlie stand by it to show contrast but again the "real life" is so unbelievable.  The camera version not so much.

Straight as can be and no limbs until the top.

It would have taken all three of us or more to wrap around the base of it.

We had such a great time.  There was no entrance fee or admittance fee at the park or museum plus we had a picnic lunch. So it was very inexpensive.  While eating we marveled at the difference between our peaceful eating spot and the noises of a restaurant.  We all agreed we came out on top with our choice.  And we enjoyed each others company.  With the money we saved we hope to take another excursion this summer or fall and have more quality family time together.

Until next time........Kristi.
